NaNoWriMo it is more like the Name your city marathon

I’m two hundred words behind and tomorrow I am going to see Jersey Boys so unless I can squeeze in some writing during the day I’ll be  2,000 words behind.  However, I think I can squeeze in some  maybe 500 words.  I’m getting kind of wobbly  for one thing I’m having some trouble tying  elements of the story together. I don’t think that it’s  serious  I have plenty  of villains and good guys and gals.  I have also used this green fiction to develop some more of my cosmology.   But I’m  sort of like a runner who started out with a great strategy for finishing the race and then forgot what it is.

If you are an old Nano pro and have some sophomore week advice on the speed/endurance writing scene please throw me a life line.

Hello: 12:00:01 The Walkers was begun at 1:34 am. 1713 words of pure magic were on the page. We had a fire, a Break up between The protagonist and his G.F. she may be out but doubt it . Then we had an escape from the fire by car and by foot. Then there was an explosion which trapped the protagonist, forcing him off a narrow rocky trail into a controlled slide down the side of the mountain. But he winds up landing in a small stream seeping out of a cave that has never been there before.

So this is the start of the novel  a lot more happens  in chapter one but I want to keep that secret. I have a  good second chapter which segways between the crumbling world and the free green people, the Walkers, ready to go for today I think it will be about the same length maybe a little longer.

The NanoWriMo people sent out a wonderful letter of encouragement written by Tom Robbins who has long been a favorite writer of mine.

Take care more news tomorrow.

The Final Preparation for NaNoWriMo: Writers Block Bashed and a Prayer for the NaNoWriMo Writer.

Howdy Folks:

Just finished up with my Vocabulary Building Subliminal Tapes which I have informed you are actually CDs. My working vocabulary in now just around 24,000 words. You wanna try me? You’ll just have to wait until I blast through my Novel for NaNoWriMo.

But the last tip. This is to prepare the mind to over come writer’s block.

Sit as you would while you are at your desk. Take several deep breaths. Now picture your self as a wasp before a massive boulder. Picture your tiny body all a quiver as you focus your waspy brain waves on this boulder and than picture a hugh mechanical pneumatic rock crusher crushing that bould into sand. That will banish your writer’s block.

Do not picture yourself as a wasp that flies full speed into the boulder as that will greatly increase your writers block as well as giving you the greatest head ache of your life.

Repeat this exercise every hour or so until bed time when you put your Bose headphones Vobus back on and suck up more vocabulary.

Now is the time to make sure you have plenty of sharpened no. 2 pencils and reams of paper.

As an unofficial minister of the spirit of the letter, I leave you with this prayer, or what not, it could be poem, or just some quasi-inspirational nonsense.

May the muse inspire you and bring long, short and beautiful sentences every day of November. May each paragraph explore a single subject. May the blending of exposition and action be flawless and may your dialog be witty, poignant, and moving as you desire. May you write each day at least 2,000 words with the effortless joy.

Subliminal Vocabulary Tapes, the Steroids of Novel Writing

Posted in NANOWRIMO, Uncategorized with tags , , , , on October 29, 2007 by obrienzspeculator

I saved tipthis for close to the last. Seamus told me not to write about it because high school kids will start using and packing on the vocabulary of Hemingway while they are only in the tenth grade. Would you want your kid hanging around someone who had a 24,000 word usable vocabulary, who could rhyme any word, and could replace overused words with less used words without having to pull out a thesaurus. I think not.

Most parents don’t want their kids to have a vocabulary that is close in size to their own. It’s hard enough to keep control when you can actually understand what they are saying. Slang tapes are pretty much no help unless you can time travel into the future to get the words while they are still relatively hip. But I digress.

Vocabulary Building Subliminal Tapes or VoBuSu Tapes, as they are known on the street, are as readily avaiable to your kids, relatives of all ages and even that neighbor who lives across the street, but to whom you feel vastly superior, as are botox, bootleg DVDs or guns. They come in strengths from the hardly noticeable, which will illicit no more than,  “Junior is really cracking the books,” to Shakespearean which will have you cursing the ebon night and asking if all the gods and stars had  not aligned against thy house and thy family. VoBu as the hipsters call them will leave you verbally inadequate to argue with your child, unless you know “American Facial Language” AFL is a language made up exclusively of facial actions from rolling the eyes to sneering, looking annoyed, sticking the tongue out, tugging on various facial piercings, etc.

But when it comes to NaNoWriMo where writers block is ugly and fatal, I see no way around their use. I’m sure the high commission on international novel writing will try to ban the use of Vocabulary Building Subliminal Tapes and testing is likely to be rigorous. But that waits to be seen. Right now I’m climbing into bed with my Bose Headphones on, ten Vobu CDs (yes they are called tapes but they may even be mp3’s) on the changer and I’m going to sleep for the next 24 hours soaking up language used mostly by Northern European writers, Writers of the 40’s through the 80’s, cyberpunk, steampunk, and post apocalyptic space operas. Tomorrow I will reveal the last of the weapons in my arsenal.
